Resumen
La ELA es una enfermedad de neurodegeneración con afectación muscular, dejando a la persona que la padece en un completo estado de dependencia y discapacidad, en el que todo momento deberá estar atendida por un cuidador. Actualmente en España esta enfermedad supone junto a la distrofia las enfermedades más discapacitantes. Para una correcta atención a los afectados por la ELA es necesaria la intervención de un equipo multidisciplinar, donde el trabajador social es una figura primordial. Tendrá un rol importante en la calidad de vida de estas personas, pero también en la de sus familiares y cuidadores. El ámbito social en el en que la persona enferma se desenvuelve, los factores de riesgo que pueden afectar, y la mejora de la calidad de vida a través de recursos y prestaciones son algunas de los aspectos de los que se hace cargo la unidad de Trabajo Social.
En el documento se aborda desde un marco teórico donde se pone en contexto a la ELA, hasta la intervención que el trabajador social realiza a lo largo del tratamiento e intervención que dichos pacientes reciben al ser diagnosticados por ella.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease with muscle involvement, leaving the affected person in a state of complete dependency and disability, requiring constant care from a caregiver. Currently in Spain, this disease, along with muscular dystrophy, is one of the most disabling illnesses. Proper care for those affected by ALS requires the intervention of a multidisciplinary team, where the social worker plays a crucial role. They will have an important impact on the quality of life of these individuals, as well as that of their families and caregivers. The social environment in which the person with ALS lives, the risk factors that may affect them, and the improvement of quality of life through resources and services are some of the aspects addressed by the Social Work unit. This document covers everything from a theoretical framework that contextualizes ALS to the intervention that the social worker carries out throughout the treatment and support that these patients receive upon diagnosis.
