Objectives: To revise the main scientific evidence in order to determine the effectiveness of hippotherapy in people with cerebral palsy. Methods: A search of randomized controlled clinical trials was carried out in Pubmed, PEDro, Cochrane and WOS databases, using “Hippotherapy”, “Equine-Asisted Therapy” and “Cerebral Palsy” as descriptors, and restricting results to those published from 2003 to date, in English and Spanish. PEDro and Jadad scales were used in order to evaluate the quality of the studies. Results: 243 studies were found, of which 5 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and classified into six groups according to the type of studied variable: the balance, the gross motor function, the symmetry of the muscles adductors, the functional performance, the postural control and the autoperception. Conclusions: This systematic review found evidence for the effectiveness of hippotherapy in person diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It is shown that, especially, it has a great effiency in the improvement of balance and gross motor function, which suggests that these should be used for the hippotherapy in people with cerebral palsy.
