The treatment of acute postoperative pain is primarily based on the use of analgesic drugs. However, despite the extensive therapeutic arsenal available, postoperative pain has been considered undertreated. This article reviews the role that nursing staff can play in improving the management of this type of pain. Some of the functions that nurses can perform prior to surgery are assessed, such as the preoperative visit, as well as postoperative actions such as the simultaneous use of complementary and pharmacological techniques with the aim of improving the patient's well-being, accelerating their recovery, in addition to considering the possible reduction of analgesic drugs and therefore their side effects as well as hospital costs. This review concludes that nurses have an important involvement in improving the treatment of acute postoperative pain.
