Efectos de los anticonceptivos orales en las estructuras del cerebro: una revisión sistemática

Abstract

Los anticonceptivos orales (AO) son los más utilizados por la población femenina, no obstante, se ha dejado fuera la investigación el efecto de éstos en el SNC y la consiguiente implicación sobre la conducta, emoción y cognición. Por tanto, el objetivo del Trabajo Fin de Grado ha sido reunir los estudios más actuales sobre los cambios estructurales en el cerebro asociados al uso de los AO. Se ha revisado un total de 7 artículos, procedentes de las bases de datos PubMed y Scopus. Los hallazgos obtenidos muestran que los cambios estructurales en la corteza cerebral están influenciados por el componente de la progesterona (androgénico o antiandrogénico), el tiempo de uso previo del anticonceptivo y la edad de la usuaria. Se comprueba un avance en esta línea de investigación, si bien se discuten algunas limitaciones metodológicas de los estudios revisados.

Oral contraceptives (OC) are the most used by the female population, however, the effect of these on the CNS and the consequent implication on behavior, emotion and cognition have been left out of the investigation. Therefore, the objective of the Final Degree Project has been to gather the most current studies on the structural changes in the brain associated with the use of OCs. A total of 7 articles have been reviewed, from the PubMed and Scopus databases. The findings obtained show that the structural changes in the cerebral cortex are influenced by the component of progesterone (androgenic or antiandrogenic), the time of previous use of the contraceptive and the age of the user. Progress in this line of research is confirmed, although some methodological limitations of the studies reviewed are discussed.
