Standard versus non-standard varieties of English: a linguistic and sociolinguistic approach

Abstract

El trabajo consiste en un análisis lingüístico y socio-lingüístico de algunas variedades importantes de la lengua inglesa. Desde un punto de vista lingüístico se analizan la gramática, la sintaxis, la pronunciación y la ortografía de las variedades para observar las diferencias que hay entre ellas. Desde un punto de vista socio-lingüístico, se analiza la actitud que los hablantes tienen hacia las variedades estándar y las no- estándar, se intentan explicar dichas actitudes y justificar si tienen fundamento lingüístico o no.

The essay consists of both a linguistic and a socio-linguistic analysis of some relevant varieties of the English language. From a linguistic point of view, the grammar, syntax, pronunciation and spelling of the varieties are analysed in order to observe the differences between said varieties. From a socio-linguistic point of view, the attitudes of speakers towards the standard and non-standard varieties are analysed, as well as trying to explain these attitudes and prove if they have any linguistic foundation.
