"Attentional Networks Task" (ANT).
The main objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of nicotine and nicotine withdrawal on attentional processes, using the Assessment Test "Attentional Networks Task" (ANT). Sixty seven students participated in the study under the following conditions: (1) Smokers subjects; (2) Smokers subjects under abstinence; and (3) non-smoking subjects. The results showed differences among the groups only in the orientation variable, in which the control and abstinence groups improved their performance when spatial cues were presented, showing higher orientation scores. With respect to the reaction time, significant differences were found between abstinent group and group without abstinence, the latter showing lower reaction time. Present results are discussed with respect to previous studies, suggesting that a disruption of regular consumption of nicotine can interfere with attention function.
