Population growth has increased the use of the natural resources at rates higher than regeneration. Therefore, sustainability parameters such as ecological footprint have emerged. This parameter is used to identify the global impact, measured by the total land area needed by the humans to fulfil their needs. Differences exist between countries regarding the natural capital. The most developed counstries (USA) cover more land because they expropiate the undeveloped countries territories. In this way, they are exploiting more resources than they shold. This is seriously affecting the planet for several reasons: on the one hand, it increases pollution and thus more greenhouse gases are released to the atmosphere; on the other hand, it directly affects the people lifestyle and quality of life (increase of poverty). Furthermore, it will have a negative impact on the sustainable development of future generations unless efforts are made to reverse the current trend of natural resources consumption for production of goods and services, or the lack of action by politicians in the developed countries.
