Sex work is a profession that, when practiced under inadequate conditions, places many women in a vulnerable situation, negatively affecting their health and well-being. The objective of this systematic review was to understand the state of scientific research on psychological well-being in sex workers. A literature search strategy was designed in the ProQuest and Web of Science databases, selecting 12 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that the largest amount of research has been conducted in Asian countries, and the most common studies are quantitative and cross-sectional (correlational or analytical). Psychological well-being is related to sociodemographic variables such as age, education received, and income level, and to personal factors such as self-esteem, life satisfaction, childhood trauma or sexual abuse, and quality of life. Furthermore, sex workers are at greater risk of suffering from mental health problems and being victims of violence, stigma, and discrimination.
