El Terremoto de Andalucía de 1884: documentación, información geoespacial y cartografía de riesgos en el municipio de Arenas del Rey

Abstract

El Terremoto de Andalucía de 1884, de magnitud 6,5, destruyó totalmente Arenas del Rey. Casi el 30% de su población resultó herida o falleció. Con el tiempo, los habitantes están olvidando esta parte de su Historia, volviéndose más vulnerables ante el peligro sísmico, que es alto en la región. Este proyecto es una iniciativa para tratar de reducir esa vulnerabilidad a través de la generación de conocimiento. Se ha abordado desde dos frentes. Por un lado, se ha recopilado información sobre el terremoto, se ha actualizado con herramientas geomáticas y se ha publicado en un blog, que ya tiene más de 1.800 visitas. Y por otro, se ha calculado el riesgo sísmico, obteniéndose que un terremoto similar en el futuro dejaría inhabitables el 60% de sus viviendas y, heridos o fallecidos, al 15% de sus habitantes. Estos resultados se transferirán al Ayuntamiento para que pueda elaborar su plan de emergencias.

The 1884 Andalusian Earthquake, with a magnitude of 6,5, caused the total destruction of Arenas del Rey. Almost 30% of the population was injured or dead. Over time, people are forgetting this episode of their History, becoming more vulnerable to the high earthquake hazard of the region. This project is an initiative to reduce that vulnerability through knowledge-building. It has been addressed from two sides. On the one hand, a blog has been implemented with information about the Earthquake, that was collected and updated using geomatics tools. The blog already has more than 1800 visits. On the other hand, a seismic risk assessment for a similar earthquake has been conducted. Results show that 60% of the dwellings would end up uninhabitable, killing or injuring almost 15% of the people. This outcome reveals that earthquake risk remains high and will be transferred for the local government to elaborate the emergency plan.
