This paper focuses on the treatment of women in prisons in Spain. Based on Wacquant's reflections on punitive policies and the functions of prisons in today's capitalist world, this dissertation explores women's penitentiaries and their particular situation from a gender perspective. A historical review will be made of the Spanish institutions for the confinement of women, serving as a guiding thread to arrive at the situation that currently exists, where we find a lack of exclusive female penitentiaries, a fact that has a direct impact on the reality that they have to live in. Overcrowding of women within the institutions, scarcity of resources, lack of individualised attention, multiple discrimination, lack of protection for those who are mothers, which also affects their children, lack of support during and after serving their sentence and violation of their rights.
